—Fernanda Thiesen ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: First Up | The Star <newsletters@email.thestar.com> Date: Fri, Aug 7, 2026 at 7:15 AM Subject: Carney's 'bailout' for developers raises eyebrows To: <fcthiesen@gmail.com> Plus, ‘nasty’ trade negotiations, subscription woes and the Taste of the Danforth returns [image: The Star] First Up [image: By Edward Keenan] By Edward Keenan Good morning. 🔎 It’s a busy morning on the crime beat: Toronto police announced Thursday they’ve arrested two teenagers in the shooting at the U.S. Consulate last month <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A403:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> who they believe are linked to a gun-for-hire network. They also made two arrests in the Salsa on St. Clair shooting <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A404:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub>, though details will not come about those until later today. Meanwhile, the SIU is investigating after Toronto police fired on a car and a 19-year-old was killed <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A405:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> as part of a weapons investigation in Mississauga. And a judge believes it likely another group of Toronto cops stole $5,000 in cash from a drug suspect. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A406:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> More on how meticulous drug-dealing accounting led to that judgment in just a moment. But First Up, here are six non-crime things to know going into the weekend: 1. One of Donald Trump’s go-to insults is “nasty.” He used it recently about Canada, and Mark Carney says it’s a fair description of trade negotiations. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A407:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> 2. Help for tenants or a “bailout” for developers? Some advocates are concerned about where Carney’s rental housing money will go. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A408:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> 3. The Taste of the Danforth is back, and it got a last-minute bailout from Carney’s government. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A409:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> 4. Months after slashing benefits, Ottawa has restored some funding for refugee healthcare. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A40A:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> 5. A beer at a Jays game now costs close to $20. Adam Radwanski says the government could (and should) do something about it. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A40B:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> 6. Longtime hockey analyst Kelly Hrudey is a free agent after Rogers declined to renew his contract. “This is not a retirement. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A40C:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> ” ⚾ Before we get into it, Mike Wilner caught up with recently beloved Jays pitcher *Kevin Gausman* at his new home field in Chicago, where the new Cubs pitcher was not on the mound as the team beat the Jays in extras. “I told them I’d do whatever they want, but I did say I would prefer not to (start against the Jays),” Gausman said. “I’d just rather focus on a team that I haven’t been with for five years.” He talks about the awe of playing in Wrigley Field, but emphasizes it’s not better than Rogers Centre, just different. “I love Toronto, everyone knows that. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A40D:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub>” Okay, let’s play ball. But concern is growing that roughly two-thirds of the money is going to loans for private developers. Carney pledged $319 million for nine projects through the new Build Canada Homes federal agency, but units won’t be protected by Ontario’s rent control regulations. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A40E:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> - *Q&A:* Reporter May Warren is taking your questions about the federal announcement live at 10 a.m. in the comments. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A40F:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> <https://rs-stripe.rs-3826-a.com/stripe/redirect?cs_stripeid=41164&cs_offset=0&cs_email=fcthiesen@gmail.com&cs_sendid=219&cs_esp=whatcountspro> <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A403:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> The white Honda Accord at the centre of the July 27 U.S. Consulate shooting investigation. The festival, which began more than 30 years ago to celebrate Greek food and culture, was cancelled during the pandemic and has returned once in 2023 since then. Now, Taste organizers are making it clear that this is not the same festival from years ago. “We know what we’re doing,” said festival lead Howard Lichtman. If you go, you might get to see The Tragically Hip’s Paul Langlois perform. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A410:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A411:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> Foreign Influence Transparency Commissioner Anton Boegman. It was expected to expose the hidden hands of traditional adversaries who faced parliamentary inquiry for foreign interference into domestic affairs. But critics say the guidelines cover such a wide scope of activities that they will sweep up allies like the U.S. as well. “To say that it’s slightly confusing would be an understatement,” said one lawyer. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A411:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A406:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> Christopher Katsarov/The Canadian Press Strange circumstances Good record-keeping helps a fitness coach dodge criminal drug charges <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A406:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> Talk about good accounting saving your life. One of Hollywood’s most prominent tellers of young adult stories, Park has tapped into the universal angst of growing up. “I’d always really wanted to create a YA show that, at the core of it, was not just a romantic story (but) more about family and sisterhood, <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A41C:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub>” she says. They thought they’d be trapped in a Columbia House Record Club kind of deal. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A41E:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> They wanted to hear my opinions in person instead (risky move, as I’m known to talk and talk). Whatever the case was in the past, it’s not hard to cancel your subscription to the Star these days. A couple of clicks online and that’s it, we’re sad to see you go. I hope (and believe) most people will never want to cancel because they get great value for their money. But we want them to stay for that reason, not because they’re trapped. (If you don’t subscribe and you want to test it yourself, you can sign up for $1 for six months right here. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A41F:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> ) I didn’t bring this up to advertise, but to illustrate the extent of the problem David Silverberg wrote about this week <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A41D:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> in his piece about the nightmare of subscriptions you can’t seem to cancel. They’re everywhere now: fitness clubs, streaming services, meal plans. Just one set of recurring pre-authorized charges after another, often with no obvious way to get out of them easily. Silverberg suggests changing that: New York State has a new law protecting against deceptive subscription practices, he points out. Canada has click-to-cancel laws for telecom companies. We could do both on a wider basis, he says. What do you think? *Is it time you had the right to hassle-free quitting for things you’ve signed up for?* Or does being trapped into that old fitness membership still delude you into thinking one day you’ll actually hit up a treadmill? Let us know in the comments here. <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A41D:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> 🦠 Before you go, do you want to know the most common sources of harmful germs in your house? Do you really want to know? I think perhaps I’d rather remain blissfully ignorant. But if you’re curious, Kevin Jiang has word from the experts. (The top bacteria swamp is not your toilet <https://click.thestar.com/t?r=37&c=40684&l=631&ctl=4A420:87365D9FF2C5B57BF0EAD3624C8F51DB67ADE39EE60F83FA&utm_email=F2175A3B3C15A1F259121A6EE1BEFFF1&utm_campaign=frst_40684&utm_campaign_id=sub> ). 😎 And a quick programming note: I’m off on vacation for just over two weeks of baseball, beaches and bumming around — as you read this, I’ll be in Stratford, then will make stops in Muskoka and Montreal.
